What is FSI?

What is FSI in Real Estate? or what is FSI in Construction?
Floor Space Index (FSI) means the quotient of the ratio of the combined gross floor area of all floors excepting areas specifically exempted under these Regulations to the total area of the plot. Or in other terms is the ratio between the Built up Area allowed and plot area available. Like if FSI is 1 then on a plot of 200 sqmts, one can build 200 sqmts of built up area and with the setbacks and open spaces, the building can be higher than one floor. It means that higher the FSI, higher built
